Walking has always been a popular pastime in and around Oxfordshire. It's certainly the best way to explore the bustling streets and tranquil walkways.
Oxfordshire itself is ideal for walking - hilly enough to give attractive views, yet with flatter river-valley walks as a gentler option. It's dotted with attractive villages often boasting a welcoming village pub or tea shop. You're never far from civilisation here - even if you do lose your way occasionally. And the mild climate means Oxfordshire's an excellent walking destination - all year round.
Cycling: Just about everyone in the area rides a bike to explore those hidden, unexpected parts of the county. Bike lanes and commuter routes cut through the city's roads. There are plenty of opportunities for bike hire in and around Oxfordshire so you can explore the countryside at your leisure. And to cap it off most market towns have a cycle repair shop.
Ewelme is an attractive village and is just a 5-10 minute walk away. It lies in a small valley and the name means "place at the river-source" - the river being the Ewelme Brook. It has a beautiful and traditional country pub and village shop.
Oxford is steeped in a rich & fascinating history. Apart from its University, The Radcliffe Camera, Bodleian Library and Bridge of Sighs make up just a few of the famous buildings. Its charming scenery has been the inspiration for many, such as Lewis Carroll and J.R.R Tolkien.
Less than 5 miles away, on the banks of the river Thames, Wallingford is a busy Anglo-Saxon market town, filled with antique shops, art galleries, cafés, restaurants, take-aways and even a large Waitrose! It is also the home of Midsomer Murders and Agatha Christie.
20 minutes drive is Henley-on-Thames, one of the most beautiful towns in England and famous for its glorious shops and the Royal Regatta, which has taken place over the first weekend of July every year since 1839 and is one of the best known regattas in the world.
The Chilterns View is the passion of Rachel, the owner, inspired by the beautiful views of the Chiltern Hills and surrounding area on her family farm.
Rachel wanted to share the beautiful views that the private estate Ewelme Down Farm offers to tourists visiting the area, and thought of no better way than to create the ultimate luxury lodge experience playing extra special care and attention to the environment.
The Chilterns View was born.
